The exclusivity period given the operators of Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) will expire today, 28 February 2006, and in its place will come the Unified Licensing Regime, which the regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), hopes will further increase competition and provide a more level playing field for telecom operators. Best Nigerian University ranked 6340 in the world!

I was just reading the World’s Universities ranking for African and still find out that no Nigerian University has been able to find itself even within the top 6000 in the world. This is no doubt the true reflector of the quality of the Nigerian education system. The few Nigerian Universities that make the top 100 in Africa are University of Ibadan (57 in Africa, 6304 in the world), Obafemi Awolowo University (69 in Africa, 6645 in the world),

Nigeria now 12th in FIFA Rankings

Despite failing to reach the final of Egypt 2006, Nigeria has moved up twelve (12) places to 12th in the latest Fifa ranking, four (4) above Cameroon and five (5) above the Egyptians. The February edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking is heavily influenced by the CAF Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria (12th, up 12), Cameroon (16th, up 7) and Egypt (17th, up 15) all make it into the top 20.

As the only FIFA World Cup™ qualifiers in the semi-finals, Côte d’Ivoire make a considerable leap up the ranking (32nd, up 10) despite losing out to the hosts on penalties in the final.

There is no change at the top of the ranking, with Brazil leading the way and the Czech Republic, Netherlands and Argentina all in pursuit. The quest for fifth position in the ranking is a tight contest; France are only one point ahead of their nearest competitors, Spain, Mexico and the USA.

This month’s world ranking covers a total of 68 matches: 32 in the African Cup of Nations, 32 friendlies and four matches remaining from the beginning of the year.

Be My V-A-L-E-N-T-I-N-E All Year Long!

To be a special Valentine to your partner takes lots of energy, time, attention and Love. Let’s all give some thought about who we are being in our relationship, what we can do to make them better and who we will have to become to have them be healthy and successful. Let’s make EVERYDAY Valentine’s Day for our partner.

Let’s begin with the premise that relationships are something that must be worked on all the time, not only when they are broken and need to be fixed!

Here are a few ideas to get you started! Happy Valentine’s Day!

V: Validate. . .
Your relationship with your partner must be an equal partnership; one that mutually supports each other in their dreams and visions of what is best for one another. Make it a point to let your partner know that you value their opinions, ideas and especially their feelings.

Never say, “You shouldn’t feel that way.” Your partner’s feelings are “their” feelings. At that moment in time it is their choice to feel that way. Listen with that understanding. If you must say something say, “I understand how you feel” and if it is appropriate, give them a big hug!

A: Attention. . .
Paying attention to the “little things” is not always easy. It takes practice and it is one of the most important aspects of a successful and healthy love relationship. It is the little things that count. If left to simmer without attention, eventually they may erupt into major conflict.

L: Love. . .
Be consistent in expressing your love for your partner in “words” and deeds. While the gift of a rose, a box of chocolates (unless they are on a diet) or a special greeting card is an _expression of love, it is important for your love partner to HEAR the words, “I love you” at least once each day.

E: Enjoy. . .
Make the best of being together. Be present when in the presence of your partner. Enjoy each precious moment. Couples who enjoy each other’s company are happier and more satisfied with their relationship. Do fun things. Go fun places. Place a high priority on enjoying life together.

N: Nurture. . .
To nurture is to nourish. Nourish one another with love. Encourage each other to openly communicate your needs. Accept your partner for who they are and support them in their individual needs and endeavors. Offer understanding by being an attentive listener. Acknowledge your partner’s goodness!

T: Time. . .
Spend “quality” time together. Make a promise to have a date with your mate no less than once each week. No excuses, please! (Ask a trusted friend to watch the children and return the favor at another time).

Pretend you are on your very first date. Reminisce. Hold hands. Make eye contact. Talk. Really listen. Put aside the cares of the day and focus on your partner. Make each moment you are together. . . count!

I: Intention. . .
We usually get what we place our intention upon. Synergize your intentions on what you want, never on what you do not want. The combined effect of two partners working together on similar things is much greater than the sum of individual effects.

Highlight your intentions to one another and concentrate on the specifics of those intentions. Lovingly remind each other of your commitment to your intentions from time to time. Develop the willful intent to serve the well being of your partner. Work together on having the kind of relationship that you can be proud to be in.

N: Needs. . .
We all have individual needs; to be loved, accepted, understood, trusted, respected, appreciated, encouraged and the list goes on. Acknowledging our needs and the needs of our love partner gives purpose to the relationship. Learn to express your needs in ways your partner can listen to and understand.

Erich Fromm once said. . . Immature love says, “I love you because I need you.” Mature love says, “I need you because I love you.”

That is the difference between being needy and having needs. The problem is not that you need love, but that you depend on your partner to create love and happiness in your life. Giving up your responsibility for satisfying those needs is a mistake.

E: Energize. . .
Breath new life into your relationship each day by consistently focusing on new ideas that keeps the fire of love burning. Partners feel energized when both are dancing to the same tune. They feel a capacity for action to continue to do the things that brought them together in the first place.

Imagining the Google Future

Most people now know that the company Sergey Brin and Larry Page founded a mere eight years ago is one of the new century’s most cunning enterprises. If there were any lingering doubts, 2005 erased them. Google’s sales jumped an estimated 50 percent to $6 billion, its profits tripled to a projected $1.6 billion, and Wall Street answered with an unprecedented vote of confidence: a $120 billion market cap, a share price soaring above $400, and a price/earnings ratio close to 70.

Google signed up about eight new hires per day in 2005- a lot of them from Microsoft, many among the smartest people on the planet at what they do. Google is on track to spend more than $500 million on research and development in 2006, and last year it launched more free products in beta than in any previous year. Name any long-term technology bet you can think of– genome-tailored drugs, artificial intelligence, the space elevator–and chances are, there’s a team in the Googleplex working on an application.

The question which raises the most widely debated question in business is now: What kind of company will Google become in the coming decades? Chris Taylor put this same question to scientists, consultants, former Google employees, and tech visionaries like Ray Kurzweil and Stephen Wolfram. They responded with well-argued, richly detailed, and sometimes scary visions of a Google future. Visit Chris Taylor for four very different scenarios for the company.

Yahoo Helps Jail Second Chinese Dissident

How many Chinese citizens are now in jail because of information Yahoo provided to the Chinese government? That is the question the not-for-profit Reporters Without Borders is asking. Yahoo already got into hot water last September for providing information that led to a ten-year jail sentence for Chinese journalist Shi Tao. Now, Reporters Without Borders has learned that a second “cyber-dissident,” Li Zhi, a 35-year-old ex-civil servant, was sentenced to eight years in prison in December, 2003 “based on electronic records provided by Yahoo,” it reports in a press release. Visit Reporters without Border for details.
